Softball SA - 4 February 2014

The Australia Day long weekend was filled with fun and competition at Barratt Reserve, West Beach where Softball SA hosted the 58th annual Senior State Championships. The four day event ran from Friday evening 24th January through to Monday afternoon 27th January, with 24 teams competing in various divisions.

Both men’s and women’s teams from across the state competed in A, B, C and D divisions for the title of State Champions. Teams from Adelaide, Broken Hill, Central Districts, Gawler, Hills, Northern Area Men’s, Port Pirie, Riverland and Sunraysia were represented in the competitive tournament.

The championships provided great entertainment with the 3rd annual Emmsee Sportswear Home Run Derby. Andrew Haren (Port Pirie) and Laura Helbig (Gawler) took it out this year and will be given the chance to defend their title at next year’s State Championships.

The Mens A and B divisions kicked things off on Friday night; playing under lights these games were a great way to start the championships. Saturday and Sunday were full days with play starting at 8:30am and finishing at 9:00pm, so all teams were ready for the shorter day on Monday and for the finals and a chance to take home the winner’s trophy.

Congratulations to the Men’s champions Hills (A Grade) and NAMSA (B Grade) and to the women champions Adelaide (A Grade), Hills (B Grade), Adelaide White (C Grade) and Central Districts (D Grade).

The men’s MVP was won by Scott Humphrys of NAMSA and the women’s MVP (the Kath Sims award) was awarded to Kelsee Hassen of CDSA. A full list of results, including team of the year can be found below this article, or on our results page.

Event organisers would like to thank everyone who was involved during the weekend; the competition was a great success due to incredible support from umpires, participants, affiliates, staff, volunteers and attendees.

We’ll see you in Mt Gambier for the Junior State Championships on Feb 15th and 16th!
